The Rotary Club of SML held its tenth annual Excellence in Education dinner Thursday, April 30, 2015, at the Westlake Golf & Country Club.  The dinner and award ceremony honored two Rotary scholarship winners and 10 local teacher of the year recipients from 9 area elementary schools and Staunton River Middle school.

Case Pieterman, chairman of the club’s scholarship committee, along with committee members Cindy DeMarco and Pidge Morgan awarded two scholarship.  The DeMarco-DeForest Scholarship was awarded to Staunton River High School student Jaelyn Tuck, who will be attending  West Virginia University and studying Pharmacy.  The second scholarship, named in memory of Alex Ernandes, was presented by his father Tim Ernandes to Franklin County High School student Timothy Miles.  Mr. Miles will be attending Virginia Tech and plans on majoring in Aerospace Engineering/Physics.

This year’s Teachers of the Year, chosen by their school’s faculty, are Sarah Metcalf, Goodview Elementary, Roxanne Rouillier, Body Camp Elementary, Alisa Morton, Huddleton Elementary, Kristen Bowles, Burnt Chimney Elementary, Debra Hines, Moneta Elementary, Kara Bernard, Glade Hill Elementary, B.J., Reid, Stewartsville Elementary,  Laura Harden, Windy Gap Elementary, Valerie Staton, Staunton River Middle School, and Christy Elliott, Dudley Elementary .

Principals of each school introduced their school’s teacher of the year and highlighted some of the traits and characteristic making his or her teacher special.  Each teacher spoke about their experiences and traits they believe make a difference for their students.
